SCMP says in its report “China’s first home-grown aircraft carrier set to carry out maiden sea trial” on Sunday that, according to anonymous Chinese naval sources, China’s first homegrown Type 001A aircraft carrier will conduct its maiden sea voyage in April.
The report says, “Last month, Liu Zheng, chairman of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC), confirmed at the sideline of the annual National People’s Congress that the Type 001A was ready for sea trials.”
The source says that the sea trial will preferably be carried out before April 23, the 69th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese navy, but it depends on hydrological and tidal conditions. A high tide level will be helpful.
According to another source close to the Chinese navy, the test will be a short one, with its basic functions to test its power systems, damage control, radar, communication, etc.
It has first to ensure there is no leaking, as the hull of the ship is made of a special Chinese steel that has not been tested yet. If no leaking has been found, there will be a second test for one or two days.
